Review: Responding to the Call

Updated: Feb 15

This is the start of a series of blog posts that I will be posting over the next few years, reviewing books that I have read for my degree in disaster relief. I will probably review some books that are not associated with my education, but most of them will be part of this series. What better than to start this series with Responding to the Call by Clinton Fleming.

Responding to the Call by Clinton Fleming

Review

The beginning of the book was really insightful and I enjoyed how the author gave us a peek into the life of a responder. I also liked that he tied the life of a responder to the life of a child of God and pointed out the connections for us (the readers). I think that the book would have been even better if the author had invested in an editor, just to make it more concise and easy to understand.

Personally, I did not enjoy the middle chapters of the book, but that could have been entirely my fault as I was having trouble focusing. Regardless, I think that the book is very much worth reading.

Reading Tips

Most of the value in this book can be found in chapters one, two, and seven. I think these tips can be beneficial for you regardless of whether you are reading the whole book or just a select amount of chapters.

  • Skim it, Read it, Skim it- This is a tip that I am burrowing from my professor who recommended his students to do this in preparation for quizzes. To do this you skim over the passage looking for main topics and headings. Using these headings you create an outline that you can use to take further notes while you read or remind yourself of what the author is writing about. Lastly, you skim it again to make sure you haven't missed anything.

  • Accept that the author is writing about what he is writing about- I apologize if that is confusing. The author jumps around as he writes, but I found that it is easier to read the book if you accept that the author is not writing about what he was writing about a page ago, he is writing about what he is writing about now.
